Adoption
The legal procedure by which a person becomes the child of another, taking their name.
Adoption is the legal procedure by which the family relationships between a child and their biological parent(s) are severed and new legal bonds with the adoptive parent(s) are established (Article 1:227-232 of the Dutch Civil Code). Requirements include that adoption is in the apparent interests of the child and that the child no longer has a reasonable interest in the biological parent.
