Irretrievable breakdown
The legal ground for divorce: the marriage has irretrievably broken down.
Irretrievable breakdown is the only legal ground for divorce in the Netherlands. It means the marriage has been disrupted to such an extent that restoration of proper marital relations can no longer be expected. The judge does not verify whether the breakdown is actually irretrievable; if one of the spouses states that the marriage has irretrievably broken down, this is in principle sufficient.
“The judge pronounced the divorce on the ground of irretrievable breakdown of the marriage.”
