Sole custody
Parental authority exercised by only one parent after a court decision.
Sole custody means that only one parent exercises parental authority over the child. After divorce, joint custody continues in principle. The court may, at the request of a parent, determine that custody is granted to one parent if there is an unacceptable risk that the child becomes trapped between the parents, or if modification is otherwise necessary in the child's interest. Sole custody is only awarded exceptionally.
“The court granted the request for sole custody due to serious communication problems.”
