Recognition of a foreign divorce is required to make a divorce granted abroad also legally valid in the Netherlands, for example for registration in the Personal Records Database. Within the EU this happens automatically under the Brussels II-ter Regulation; outside the EU a separate procedure or legalisation is often required.
