Joint custody

Both parents are jointly responsible for the care and upbringing of their child.

Joint custody means both parents are jointly responsible for the care and upbringing of their minor child. After a divorce, joint custody remains the standard in the Netherlands. Important decisions about the child, such as school choice, relocation abroad, or a medical procedure, must be made by both parents. In case of disagreement, the court can be involved.

With joint custody, both parents must consent to a relocation abroad.
