Spousal maintenance

A financial contribution paid by one ex-partner to the other after divorce.

Spousal maintenance is a financial contribution that one ex-spouse pays to the other after a divorce. The obligation is based on the solidarity that arose from the marriage. The amount is determined by the needs of the recipient and the financial capacity of the payer. Since 2020, the revised Spousal Maintenance Act applies, limiting the duration to a maximum of 5 years in most cases.

The judge ruled that he must pay €800 per month in spousal maintenance.
