Legal separation
A legal separation where the marriage continues to exist but cohabitation is ended.
Legal separation is an alternative to divorce in which the marriage formally continues but the obligation to live together is lifted. This option is sometimes chosen for religious or financial reasons. The consequences are largely the same as divorce (division, alimony), but the marriage is not dissolved. After legal separation, a divorce can still be requested later.
“For religious reasons they chose legal separation instead of divorce.”
