Stepparent adoption

Adoption of the partner's child by the stepparent, making them a legal parent.

Stepparent adoption is the adoption of the partner's child by the stepparent under Article 1:227 of the Dutch Civil Code. Through this, the stepparent acquires full parental rights. Requirements include that the stepparent has cared for and raised the child for at least three years, that adoption is in the interests of the child, and that the child no longer has a reasonable interest in the biological parent.

After four years of caring for the child together, the stepfather filed for stepparent adoption.
