The official document that initiates divorce proceedings at the court.
The petition is the official legal document that initiates divorce proceedings. It must be drafted and filed by a lawyer. The petition contains the grounds for divorce (irretrievable breakdown) and may include ancillary requests regarding alimony, division, custody and access. In a joint petition, both parties sign the petition.
